DESCRIPTION: This good looking MACK LJ Diesel Tractor and pair of FRUEHAUF Tankers was photographed by the late Joe Wanchura in Chicago in 1948. The driver stands atop his rear trailer. The tractor carries a 1948 Illinois license plate. Transport Service Co. had just been founded in 1946, and has now grown into one of the largest tank truck carriers in the nation.
TRANSPORT SERVICE CO.: Founded in Chicago in 1946 by John Crowe to transport fuel oil in the midwest. Historically fuel oil had been carried in tank cars on the railroads, but during WWII, but the shortage of railroad cars created the need for highway transportation. John Crowe III joined the company in 1955. The company expanded into the chemical business, and then acquired a food grade products transporter. In 1972 TSC expanded their chemical business through the acquisition of the chemical transportation operations of Refiners. Then in 2008 TSC was acquired by Kenan Advantage Group, the nation’s largest bulk transporter. TSC remains one of the largest tank carriers in the nation, with 2 divisions: Chemical and Food Grade, employing over 700 non-union drivers with 700 late model tractors and 1400 specialized, stainless steel trailers.
HISTORY OF THE MACK LJ: The “L Series” of heavy haulage Macks was introduced in 1940 and produced until 1956. Early models used the recently introduced Mack Thermodyne gasoline engines, with most later models being diesel powered by the Mack 672-cid engine. Some 31,000 of the L Series were produced, with 13,931 LJ’s being built, making the LJ the most popular of the L Series.
